Recorded over the Winter and Spring of 2009, Espers III was intended to be an aural tonic to the layered fullness of the band’s second offering. The idea was to record as little as possible in the hope of achieving a stronger, more oxygenated sonic presence. Where II was meant to be almost claustrophobic in its density and darkness, III was envisioned as being a lighter affair; less heavy and more nuanced. The band attempted to create something that would be perhaps cheery at times, though that mark may have been missed. As more time passed in the recording process, a growing dementia within both song and lyrics occurred, such that even the lightest of fare from III seems oddly unwholesome at heart.

As with past releases, III was recorded with the LP in mind. The album is intended to work as a whole and has been organized to best play as two equally weighted sides. Recorded entirely to analogue tape, the album was then also mixed to tape – a factor that became all the more important as an emphasis on underplaying increased. When more space is created in a recording the less sterile that space becomes.

The concept of space flowed through from the recording process into the song writing and lyrics. Without dominating the meaning, each of these songs in some way touch upon “new space,” whether by envisioning it, finding it, claiming it, or colonizing it. In fact, the album almost took on the very name, ‘Colony’, due to a sub-textual thought process that touched upon Herzog’s Aguirre, Heart of Darkness, cult groups, deep Amazonian treks, religious nation building, ritualistic drug ceremonies, etc.

Taking drugs to take canoe trips to take drugs on.

This album’s shift in cover aesthetic mirrors the band’s themes and their desire to reach beyond what might be expected of an Espers album. Gone is the folk art two-dimensionality so skilfully provided by the band’s guitarist Brooke Sietinsons. Welcome to the three-dimensionality and metaphoric imagery of the new Espers aesthetic.

Espers

17/08/09

Originally consisting of Greg Weeks, Meg Baird and Brooke Sietinsons, Espers activity centred around their ‘Esperhaus’, a house that has acted as a haven for like-minded artists and performers. The friendships, collaborations and creativity that occurs there has seen Espers multiply in number, with the addition of Otto Hauser (percussion, electronics), Helena Espvall (cello) and Chris Smith (bass, and whatever it takes). Their neo-psychedelic folk has won them a devoted following, drawing influence from chamber rock, aroque pop and late-‘60s British folk. Their album ‘Espers 3’ is released on October 26th through Wichita.

The Cave Singers

17/08/09

The Cave Singers
The Cave Singers first album ‘Invitation Songs’ was released early 2008 to hearty plays from the likes of Zane Lowe (Radio 1) and a warm flurry of critical acclaim. NME declared it a “post-folk masterpiece of a debut”, a fitting though rather unexpected description for a Seattle act formed from the ashes of three disbanded hardcore/post-punk bands (Quirk from Hint, Hint, Lund from Cobra High and Fudesco from Pretty Girls Makes Graves and before that Murder City High). Perhaps it explains the energy and edge that soars through even their prettiest of folk-laced songs.

Welcome Joy is a gorgeous, rich folky stew hitting musical touchstones from Led Zeppelin III (think Bron Yr Aur Stomp) with a healthy dollop of the more mournful Stevie Nicks’ songs from Fleetwood Mac’s mid-’70s period. Produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Destroyer, Ladyhawk), the album is far richer and more interesting sounding than their debut. The band performs their dramatic, forlorn and occasionally triumphant music in a wonderfully autumnal haze. ‘Welcome Joy’ is out now via Matador.

Woods

17/08/09

Woods
WOODS are primarily the duo of Jeremy Earl (owner of Fuck It Tapes and Woodsist) and Jarvis Taveniere (Meneguar and Wooden Wand), and aided live by friends G. Lucas Crane on tape effects and Kevin Morby.

Jeremy’s Brooklyn based label, Woodsist, has recently released Vivian Girls, Wavves, Kurt Vile, Sic Alps and Crystal Stilts, among many others.

WOODS released their debut UK single on Half Machine Records on Monday 10th August 2009. The lo-fi Flying Nun-esque,‘To Clean’, is backed with the skeletal psych folk of exclusive acoustic version, ‘Rain On’, recorded live on WVKR radio.

Both tracks feature on their recently released fourth album, ‘Songs of Shame’, released through their own Woodsist label and cassette tape label Shrimper.

“Consistently awesome lo-fi pop” – Gorilla vs Bear

“A distinctive blend of spooky campfire folk, lo-fi rock, homemade tape collages, and other noisy interludes, all anchored by deceptively sturdy melodies.” – Pitchfork
